Facebook fined £500,000 for Cambridge Analytica scandal

October 25, 2018 by vietnamnet Leave a Comment

Facebook has been fined £500,000 by the UK's data protection watchdog for its role in the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said Facebook had let a "serious breach" of the law take place. The fine is the maximum allowed under the old data protection rules that applied before GDPR took effect in May. The ICO said Facebook had given app developers access to people's data "without clear consent". In July, the ICO notified the social network that it intended to issue the maximum fine. Confirming the fine, it said in a statement: "Between 2007 and 2014, Facebook processed the personal information of users unfairly by allowing application developers access to their information without sufficiently clear and informed consent, and allowing access even if users had not downloaded the app, but were simply 'friends' with people who had." "Facebook also failed to keep the personal information secure because it failed to make suitable checks on apps … [Read more...] about Facebook fined £500,000 for Cambridge Analytica scandal

Probe ordered into handover of Hmong royal palace to gov’t department

August 20, 2018 by vnexpress Leave a Comment

The decision came following angry demands by the family in the northern highlands' Ha Giang Province. Vuong Duy Bao, grandson of the last Hmong king, Vuong Chi Sinh (or Vuong Chi Thanh, 1886-1962), wrote a letter to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc last month asking for the century-old palace to be returned to the family. He expressed anger and confusion at Ha Giang authorities' decision to hand it over to the Dong Van District Department of Culture and Information in 2012, which he said the family had only learned of two months ago. In 1993 the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism had listed the palace as a National Heritage Site without informing the family, and in 2002 Ha Giang authorities attempted to evict them from the palace to turn it into a museum, the letter said. Following the clan's petition to the government against the eviction attempt, the culture ministry said its decision in 1993 did not nationalize the palace, and confirmed the family has the right to use and live … [Read more...] about Probe ordered into handover of Hmong royal palace to gov’t department

A corner of Da Nang (Source: VNA) Da Nang (VNA) – The central city of Da Nang boasts various advantages for tourism, from the beautiful beaches and sea, to forest, river and lake ecosystems, but it is essential that the city finds its own unique tourism products. Experts said those natural advantages, when combined with the city’s modern infrastructure, good services, safety and hospitality, create unique traits for the central coastal city.    Da Nang has emerged as a destination of leisure, media and spiritual tourism, as well as entertainment and shopping activities, and a venue of conferences. However, compared to other central cities like Hue and Hoi An, Da Nang does not have as many cultural and historical sites. Therefore, the city has looked to create its own events, such as the international fireworks festival and international sport tournaments in the past years. Da Nang also tries to offer new tourism attractions and products year after year, … [Read more...] about Da Nang looks for its own unique tourism products

Megastar And Policy Concerns

June 30, 2010 by robert Leave a Comment

Megastar And Policy ConcernsBy Nguyen TanThe lawsuit which six local enterprises have recently filed against Megastar for abusing its market dominance shows that local businesses have started using the Competition Law to protect themselves. However, from the perspective of State management, the saga is a sad commentary on Vietnam’s filmdom.Vietnam’s movie sector once flourished in the post-1975 period. Apart from making popular movies, the industry also boasts 350 movie theaters and 1,400 mobile movie-screening teams. However, the advent of market forces in the late 1980s has plunged the local movie industry into crisis. In 2006, the Cinematography Law came into force, aiming to develop a modern filmmaking industry steeped in progressive values and national identity, and capable of satiating the public’s soaring need for cultural fulfillment. To that end, the law holds that urban zoning plans should set aside land for the construction of movie theaters (Clause 6, … [Read more...] about Megastar And Policy Concerns

Vietnamese Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien has requested an inspection of the bikini performance on a Vietjet plane carrying the national U23 football team back home after completing their campaign at the 2018 AFC U23 Championship in China. In his dispatch issued on Monday, Minister Thien asked ministerial inspectors to work with relevant authorities in investigating the incident and suggesting an appropriate penalty for the budget airline. A full report on the matter is expected to be submitted to the minister by January 31. Vietjet has been in hot water since Sunday, when clips began to circulate across social media platforms showing bikini-clad dancers strutting and performing suggestive moves on the airline’s Shanghai-Hanoi flight carrying the U23 players.
