Domestic coffee prices pick up in Vietnam on global cues, tight supplies

HANOI -- Vietnam's domestic coffee prices edged up on Thursday, on upbeat global prices and limited supplies as farmers refrained from selling the bean on hopes that prices could rise further, traders said. Farmers in the Central Highlands, Vietnam's coffee-growing capital, sold coffee at VND33,500-34,000 ($1.46-$1.48) per kg, up from last week's VND32,300. May robusta coffee on Wednesday settled at its highest level in a year, at $1,463 per metric ton, Refinitiv Eikon data showed. "Domestic prices inched up this week following a skyrocket in global prices," a trader based in the coffee belt said. "Farmers are not under pressure to release beans to cash in for holiday anymore and are hoping prices would edge up further so supplies are very tight." Another trader also based in the region said farmers had already sold 40%-50% of their beans harvested in the 2020/21 crop year that began on Oct. 1. Traders in Vietnam offered 5% black and broken grade 2 robusta at a premium of … [Read more...] about Domestic coffee prices pick up in Vietnam on global cues, tight supplies

Tight Covid-19 preventive measures applied in Chi Linh City

Households in Chi Linh City in the northern province of Hai Duong have been granted cards for even and odd days to go to market amid the on-going Covid-19 pandemic in the locality. Each local household has been presented with five cards for even and odd days, meaning that each card is used for every three days. Nguyen Tien Hung, head of Sao Do Market’s Management Board, said that people were only allowed to go to the market if they show their card. They are required to ensure Covid-19 preventive regulations, including temperature checks and face mask wearing, as well as providing their personal information so that local authorities can contact them if necessary. Hung added that there had been no disorder at the market. People often only buy food and other necessities enough for three days. Prices of goods have been still maintained after the Tet Holiday. Sao Do Market is home to around 300 traders who are also required to make health … [Read more...] about Tight Covid-19 preventive measures applied in Chi Linh City

Former tourism chief blames visa rule for Vietnam’s falling tourist arrivals

Editor’s note: Luong Hoai Nam, former deputy head of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, says the current visa policy is discouraging international tourists from visiting the country in his op-ed exclusively written for Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. Nam’s piece of writing is particularly worth noticing at a time when Vietnam reported its tenth straight drop in tourism arrival number in March, according to the VNAT statistics. The Vietnamese tourism visa policy, especially the complicated procedures to get a visa, is one of the import reasons why the number of international tourists visiting Vietnam did not increase but continuously shrank over the past time. Local tourism authorities attributed the falling number arrivals in ten months in a row to the plunges of the Russian and Chinese markets, while the growths of other markets could not offset for such losses. Such explanation, to me, is only partially correct. Reality is that the tourism visa policy is a … [Read more...] about Former tourism chief blames visa rule for Vietnam’s falling tourist arrivals
