Low coffee prices upset farmers in spite of bumper crop
Binh Phuoc Province has 16,000 hectares of coffee trees, concentrating in Bu Dang, Bu Gia Map and Dong Phu districts. Unlike Central Highlands provinces, coffee trees in Binh Phuoc were grown sparsely in many places. At this time, most coffee fields are entering harvest season with higher productivity than previous year. However, the price of fresh coffee was merely VND6,000 per kilogram and the price of coffee bean was around VND30,000-VND32,000 per kilogram, the lowest level in the past ten years. Mr. Le Van Tan, a farmer with 13 years of experience in growing coffee in Tho Son Commune in Bu Dang District, said that his family has more than 1.7 hectares of coffee trees. Last year, his coffee fields yielded more than 5 tons of coffee bean which was sold above VND37,000 per kilogram. He is confident that productivity will be more than 7 tons of coffee bean this year but as the price of coffee is only VND32,000 per kilogram, his family is anxious. In more than a dozen years of growing … [Read more...] about Low coffee prices upset farmers in spite of bumper crop
Vietnam ranks low on World Giving Index
The country ranked 84th out of 128 economies in the World Giving Index released last week by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), an international organization that "promotes giving to transform lives and communities across the world." The CAF surveyed more than 1.3 million people in 128 countries and territories around the world over a decade between 2009 and 2018. The survey asked people if they had helped a stranger or someone they didn't know who needed help, donated money to charity, or volunteered their time to an organization. They collated answers to these questions to formulate the World Giving Index. Vietnam scored an overall 26 percent, far behind its Southeast Asian neighbors such as Myanmar (2nd), Indonesia (10th), Thailand (21st), Malaysia (30th), the Philippines (33rd) and Singapore (46th). In Southeast Asia, Vietnam was only above its neighbor Cambodia (102nd). The report revealed that 42 percent of Vietnamese people are ready to help strangers while only … [Read more...] about Vietnam ranks low on World Giving Index
Saigon luxury apartment prices up 40 pct in 3 years
Vo Huynh Tuan Kiet, marketing head of CBRE’s housing projects division, said at a recent forum that the reason for the price surge is dwindling land supply in central business districts, leading to higher investment costs in luxury projects. Limited supply of luxury apartments combined with rising material costs have pushed prices of this segment by 10-13 percent annually in the last three years. This growth rate is twice that of the middle and low segments, he added. Le Hoang Chau, chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Real Estate Association (HoREA), said that prices have gone up to VND300 million ($12,970) per square meter for some projects in District 1. Chau noted that reason for the big price tag is that HCMC authorities have been limiting new projects in District 1 and 3 since last year, leading to lower supply in the area. HoREA data shows that the number of completed housing units in the first nine months of this year fell by 53 percent … [Read more...] about Saigon luxury apartment prices up 40 pct in 3 years

(Photo: VNA) Tien Giang (VNS/VNA) - Farmers in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang have begun harvesting off-season dragon fruit, earning high incomes. In recent years, farmers have been using advanced farming techniques to grow off-season dragon fruit to avoid an oversupply during the main harvest season. The off-season is normally between December and March, with harvests three to four times a year. Sau Long, who has a 1.1ha red-flesh dragon fruit orchard in Cho Gao district, had a yield of one tonne of dragon fruit in the first off-season harvest and sold the crop for 28 million VND (1,200 USD). Traders have bought red-flesh dragon fruit for 28,000 VND a kilogramme, up 6,000 VND compared to last month. Tran Van Chon in Cho Gao’s Trung Hoa commune said he would harvest nearly two tonnes of off-season … [Read more...] about Off-season dragon fruit fetches high price for Tien Giang farmers
