The country’s leading telecom company, Viettel, is set to become a digital service provider this year, having lined up a number of products and services from the digital eco-system. “To create a digital society, Viettel must do two things: manufacture products and services of industry 4.0 standard and promote digitisation of the government,” Gen Le Dang Dung, chairman of Viettel Group, told Viet Nam News. The military-owned company is upgrading its 4G network to create infrastructure for the internet of things (IoT). As statistics show, Vietnam is a country with highest growth rate in spending on cloud computing in the period of 2010-2016 (64.4% per year), much higher than the average annual rate of ASEAN (49.5%). By 2018, Vietnam has earned 41/100 points and become the 14th country in the ranking of cloud service coverage among countries. This fact has proven that the cloud computing model has become popular and started to dominate the traditional information technology model. In the future, the application of this model in Vietnam is forecast to develop and vary more vigorously. However, the real spending on cloud computing in Vietnam remains low, standing at just USD 1.7 in 2016, 107 times lower than that of Singapore; 6.5 times lower than that of Malaysia; 2.4 times lower than that of Thailand and 1.3 times lower compared to that of the Philippines. Viettel IDC (a member of the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group) organized a seminar in Hanoi on July 16 with the topic ‘Cloud Computing – Foundation for Industrial Revolution 4.0’. In the seminar, the representative of Viettel IDC reported the overview of contemporary trends in the world and in Vietnam regarding cloud computing as well as barriers that are preventing many enterprises and state offices to move their IT systems to Cloud – one of the primary factors to participate in Industry 4.0. Statistics show that Vietnam is the country that has the highest rate of expense increase on Cloud in the period from 2010 – 2016 (at 64.4 percent per year), higher than the average figure of the whole ASEAN (49.5 percent).
