Talks of additional elections to fill Vietnam’s 500 legislature seats
Some provinces and cities in Vietnam are seeking permission to hold additional elections after preliminary results of the national ballot to select members of the lawmaking National Assembly on Sunday showed that the number of deputies elected was fewer than the expected 500. Eligible citizens across the country cast their votes on Sunday to elect 500 members to Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly for the 2016-2021 tenure. Vietnam’s National Election Council said it had received reports from provincial and municipal election committees stating that the quota of assigned seats after vote counting had not been met. Among the affected localities are Can Tho City and Soc Trang Province, which lacked two and one deputies respectively. Regular visitors to Hoa Tien Village in the north-central province of Nghe An’s Quy Chau District would no doubt have seen some of their professional young tour guides in action. But community tourism in the village, which has won a place on the national tourism map as an attractive destination, struggled to find success without older villagers also working as tour guides. The idea of involving older villagers in tourism activities was first raised in 2014, when the Thai Cultural Conservation Club was established by a group of local Thai ethnic minority people. From an initial eight members, who shared the same pastime of singing Thai folk songs, the club has now grown to 38, including some who have been awarded the title "Excellent Master Singer", like Sam Thi Vinh aged 71.
