COVID-19 widens existing gender inequalities: ILO

More than 70 per cent of Việt Nam’s working-age women are in the labour force. Photo ILO Vietnam HÀ NỘI – With a remarkably high labour market participation rate, women in  Việt Nam face multiple and persistent labour market inequalities, and carry a disproportionate double burden of work and family responsibilities, researchers have revealed. A new research brief by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Việt Nam shows the COVID-19 pandemic has not only exacerbated existing inequalities but created new gender gaps. More than 70 per cent of Việt Nam’s working-age women are in the labour force, compared to the global level of 47.2 per cent and an average of 43.9 per cent in Asia and the Pacific. While the gender gap in labour force participation is narrower in Việt Nam than in the world, it has still stood at 9.5 percentage points (men’s rate higher than women’s) over the last decade. USAID supports flood-affected people in Quang Ngai province

USAID supports flood-affected people in Quang Ngai province. - Illustrative image (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – As many as 456 households in Nghia Hanh district of the central province of Quang Ngai will benefit from financial support funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for repairing and reinforcing their houses damaged by typhoons and floods last year. Under a decision issued on March 4 by the provincial People’s Committee, 11.6 billion VND (503,745 USD) will be distributed directly to the households in the two phases. The funding is part of the 12.3-billion-VND aid package pledged by USAID to support flood-affected people in the district. Widow desperate to save her son after losing husband to heart disease

A widow from Tay ethnic group in Thai Nguyen Province is calling for financial support to save her son from heart disease. Hoang Thi Binh calls for help for her son Hoang Thi Binh is a resident in Thanh Long Village, Phuc Luong Commune. Binh was worried after finding out that her son had a fever after she returned home. "He has a fever again. I'll give him medicine for fever then I'll give him herbal medicine. I'm too poor to take him to the hospital," she said. Binh said her husband had heart disease but because of poverty, he never went to large hospitals. Before the family had enough money, he died in 2013. A few days later, their house collapsed so Binh took her two children to live with her parents-in-law. Unfortunately, her eldest son, Hoang Anh Hai, was also diagnosed with heart disease. In April 2018, Binh's son situation suddenly worsened, causing him to faint several times.
