Vietnam-Canada relations to expand: official

PM’s visit to maintain impetus of Vietnam-Canada comprehensive partnership

Strengthening mutual understanding, trust Vietnam and Canada established diplomatic ties in 1973 and began the exchange of high-ranking delegations since 1994. During a visit by Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh in September 2014, the foreign ministers of Vietnam and Canada signed a Letter of Intent on consolidating and boosting bilateral relations. In September 2016, when Canadian Foreign Minister Stephane Dion visited Vietnam, the two sides agreed to promote cooperation in seven fields mentioned in the Letter of Intent, with a focus on trade-investment and education-training. VN, Canada promote Comprehensive Partnership

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc (R) and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau - Photo: VGP Viet Nam and Canada established diplomatic relationship in 1973 and released the Joint Statement on the establishment of Comprehensive Partnership in November 2017, focusing on seven cooperative areas, including politics-diplomacy, trade-investment, development and cooperation, defense-security, culture-education, science-technology and people-to-people exchanges.  Viet Nam is currently the largest trade partner of Canada among ASEAN nations. The two-way trade turnover in 2017 reached nearly US$5 billion. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. When you join Saint Patrick’s Day, you have to wear a green T-shirt or green dress because green attire is the main part of celebrations that generally involve public parades. Vietnamese expats in US, UK, and Canada celebrate Tet

Addressing the event on February 2, Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh wished overseas Vietnamese a new year of happiness and prosperity. He informed them of Vietnam’s new developments, thanking them for their sentiments towards the homeland and their contributions to the country’s growth and comprehensive partnership with the US. Also on February 2, the Vietnamese Consulate General in Vancouver held a Tet celebration for overseas Vietnamese in the western provinces of Canada. During the celebration, participants were treated to delicious traditional Vietnamese cuisines and special art performances. On February 4, over 400 Vietnamese people living in the United Kingdom gathered with international friends at the Vietnamese Embassy in London to welcome the Year of the Dog. Vietnamese expats in Canada gather for Tet celebration

Earlier, Vietnamese people in Ottawa and Montreal and cities also met on the threshold of the Lunar New Year 2018.
