(Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNA) – A calligraphy festival is underway at Vietnam Quoc Tu (Vietnam National Pagoda) in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City to welcome the Year of the Buffalo in the lunar calendar and preserve the country’s traditional culture. The festival “Pho Ong Do” (the Street of Calligraphers), themed “A Spring of Peace”, was launched by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) in HCM City on February 7. Two pagodas with national records in HCMC’s new Thu Duc city

Minh Dang Quang Buddhist Institute at 505 Hanoi Highway in Thu Duc was established in 1968 by Venerable Minh Dang Quang, founder of the Vietnamese Mendicant Buddhist Sect. The pagoda consists of four 40-meter towers with symmetrical design to commemorate Buddhist monks and the sect’s founders. Some of the floors serve as reading rooms or store Buddhist scriptures. Its curved roofs are adorned with stylized lotus flowers and Falun wheels. The central hall has a wooden interior with relief sculptures. A Sakyamuni Buddha statue soaring 7.2 meters and weighing 7.2 tons is enshrined in a 13-meter wooden tower in the middle of the sanctum. Behind the towers are the old halls of the institute. They are small but mark the start of the Minh Dang Quang Buddhist Institute and the Mendicant Order in the south. There is a large garden with trees, bonsai and idols made of different materials. Performing online religious rituals amid Covid-19

Phuc Khanh Pagoda in Hanoi conducted a prayer for the Lunar New Year on February 25, or the 14 th day of the first lunar month. The ceremony will go online to bring followers together during COVID-19. This has also been done at other religious places. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic in some localities, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha experimented with an online prayer scheme during the spring festival season in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The scheme is being piloted at 12 pagodas to mark the start of the new lunar year. It is hoped that the trial will meet the demands of the people, as they traditionally head to pagodas and temples in the early spring to pray for health, happiness, and good fortune in the year ahead.
