Cu Lao Xanh converts to plastic waste free island
In response to the "Clean up the world” campaign and the "Anti plastic waste" movement, on September 27, at Cu Lao Xanh Island in Nhon Ly Commune, offshore from Quy Nhon City, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee coordinated with the Binh Dinh Provincial Youth Union to announce the model on building Cu Lao Xanh into a "Youth island without plastic waste". The model will be deployed for three months, focusing on activities on providing information about the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment and human health; calling for joint efforts in protecting the environment; and changing behaviours and habits of using disposable plastic products to help to reduce plastic waste. The local mobile youth team for environmental protection in Cu Lao Xanh will play a key role in implementing the model. Two pagodas with national records in HCMC’s new Thu Duc city
Minh Dang Quang Buddhist Institute at 505 Hanoi Highway in Thu Duc was established in 1968 by Venerable Minh Dang Quang, founder of the Vietnamese Mendicant Buddhist Sect. The pagoda consists of four 40-meter towers with symmetrical design to commemorate Buddhist monks and the sect’s founders. Some of the floors serve as reading rooms or store Buddhist scriptures. Its curved roofs are adorned with stylized lotus flowers and Falun wheels. The central hall has a wooden interior with relief sculptures. A Sakyamuni Buddha statue soaring 7.2 meters and weighing 7.2 tons is enshrined in a 13-meter wooden tower in the middle of the sanctum. Behind the towers are the old halls of the institute. They are small but mark the start of the Minh Dang Quang Buddhist Institute and the Mendicant Order in the south. There is a large garden with trees, bonsai and idols made of different materials.
