The Vietnamese education system has been checking off target after target in recent years, Photo: ISHCMC In the afternoon of ­November 3, at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi, Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong met with 55 of the best performers of ­Vietnamese schools and ­universities in the 2017-2018 school year. According to the leader, although limitations do still exist in the education sector and the country keeps striving for more, Vietnamese education is on a level it has never reached before. A recent report by the Ministry of Education and Training’s (MoET) Continuing Education Department shows that the current rate of literate people between the ages of 15 and 60 is nearly 98 per cent, reaching the target set for 2020. With an aim to raise funds for the KOTO Foundation, KOTO Dream Ride 2018 was a fantastic occasion for people to support a great cause while enjoying a good time on the weekend. The 55-kilometer ride started at UNIS Hanoi and journeyed through the villages, pagodas, and green paddy fields that make up northern Vietnam’s stunning landscape. This year's opening performance will have 40 young guitarists from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho, performing pieces by British composer Mark Houghton. Decree 86 expected to fuel foreign investment in education

The Government’s Decree 86/CP, which took effect on August 1, is expected to stimulate investment in education with a new regulation allowing foreign-funded schools to enroll more Vietnamese students. Pupils at the British International School Hanoi (Photo: nordangliaeducation.com) The decree raised the ceiling for the rate of Vietnamese students at kindergartens, primary, secondary and high schools to 50 percent from the previous quotas of 10 percent for the primary level and 20 percent for secondary and high schools. Troy Griffiths, Deputy Managing Director at real estate company Savills Vietnam, said with a young population of over 94 million, Vietnam has advantages to develop the education sector. He said Ho Chi Minh City is among 27 cities worldwide which house more than 50 international schools, adding that it reflects the big appeal of the local education market. British Vietnamese International School Hanoi celebrates first graduation ceremony

Alternative education approaches proving popular Modern Montessori International (MMI), a Singaporean company specializing in early childhood education, opened its largest overseas pre-school campus at the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) in southern Binh Duong province in mid-2017. The new campus was built with initial investment of $2 million and is the company’s first in Vietnam directly owned by MMI Singapore. According to Mr. Steven Kho, Country Manager of MMI Vietnam, they intend to almost double student numbers to 170 by September. MMI Vietnam is one of many schools offering the Montessori method of education. For the past ten years, people in Vietnam have begun to refer to Montessori as a great educational method for children, especially those aged six years or less.
