Annual blood-donation campaign targets 30,000 units of blood
Viet Nam News HCM CITY — At least 30,000 units of blood are expected to be collected from volunteers at 26 provinces and cities in the country via an annual blood-donation campaign called Hành Trình Đỏ (Red Journey) 2018. The campaign will begin on June 14 when blood donors in the country will be honoured. It will last until July 15. The campaign will start in the Mekong Delta province of Cà Mau and then take palce in 25 provinces and cities including Kiên Giang, Cần Thơ, HCM City, Lâm Đồng, Đắk Lắk, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Khánh Hòa, Phú Yên, and Bình Định. Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Ngọc Thành, 59, from HCM City has donated his blood 64 times but cannot remember the exact year when he did so for the first time. “I was very impressed with the word ‘humanity’ and humanitarian movements. I have nothing but my desire to do humanitarian activities. So, I decided to donate blood voluntarily to save the lives of needy patients,” said Thành. Thành who currently works as a security guard at a supermarket, has loved humanitarian activities since he worked at a shoe company more than 20 years ago. Thành said that he used to be an alcoholic. Once at a blood donation event, a doctor said that his donated blood cannot be used because tests showed several problems. “I knew my blood was not used because I drank too much. Voluntary Blood Donation Day observed nationwide
(Photo: VNA)Addressing the event, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Van Tam said that the blood donation movement has been launched in the city since 1999, with the volume of blood units collected rising over the years. Last year, Can Tho collected 31,747 blood units, equal to 115 percent of the target assigned by the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation. In the first three months of this year, 8,518 blood units were donated, equivalent to 40 percent of this year’s quota. However, Tam said that the blood collected is not enough at certain time, especially during the lunar New Year (Tet) and summer holidays, and the donors are mainly students and young people. Therefore, this year’s meeting also aims to raise public awareness of the significance and importance of blood donation, he added. Vietnam’s largest blood donation festival opens

Thousands of health workers respond to blood donation festival
According to Dr. Bach Quoc Khanh, Director of the NIHBT, Thursday’s event kick-started a series of blood donation events prior to the Xuan Hong (Pink Spring) Festival 2018, scheduled to take place from March 4-11. The major part of this year’s Xuan Hong Festival will be organised at the NIHBT on March 10-11, Khanh said. Thanks to the pre-Lunar New Year (Tet) communication and mobilisation work, the NIHBT’s blood reserve currently stands at more than 9,500 units of blood, ensuring a supply of blood for emergency and treatment at hospitals for about 10 more days. Blood donation drive held in Hanoi
This was the first activity ahead of the Xuan Hong (Red Spring) Festival 2018 which is one of the largest blood donation drive of the year. The activity aimed to promote the traditions of the hospital over the past years and demonstrated the doctors' and staff's responsibilities to ensure an adequate blood supply for more than 150 hospitals in the Northern region. According to Dr. Bach Quoc Khanh, Director of the institute, after the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, the hospital’s blood reserve currently stands at no more than 9,000 units of blood, only ensuring a supply of blood for emergency and treatment at hospitals for about 10 more days.
