SINGAPORE -- Vietnam Airlines JSC will struggle to be profitable on non-stop flights between Vietnam and the United States due to a lack of demand from business travelers, but it may launch them anyway as early as next year, the carrier’s CEO said on Monday. Duong Tri Thanh, and his counterparts at other state-controlled Southeast Asian carriers such as Thai Airways International PCL and Malaysia Airlines, are trying to balance government desires for growth with what is best for the airlines’ financial health in a competitive market. “The philosophy of the company is to help the economy and try to be viable and profitable,” Thanh told Reuters on the sidelines of a conference ahead of the Singapore Airshow. “But growing the economy is more of a mandate. You can see on most of the intercontinental routes we are not making money. But we are helping to get people in and out.” The market for flights between Southeast Asia and the United States is highly … [Read more...] about Southeast Asian airlines look to non-stop U.S. flights despite profit challenges

Obama visit shows Vietnam is now a country, not a war
Strong emotional link When I asked Henry Kissinger for an interview in New York City ten years ago, he said he would never answer questions from a North Vietnamese journalist. But he was emotional when I asked if he was still bitter about Vietnam. “Vietnam is a closed chapter in my life. I wish you well and I wish Vietnam well,” he said. To my amazement, he kept telling the guests around him that he wished Vietnam well, as if, I feel, it was a surprising thing for him to say. When I attended a Vietnam War conference in 2006 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston with people who had a major influence on the Vietnam War, such as U.S. President Jimmy Carter and United States Army General Alexander Haig, I submitted a question about Agent Orange. It was another surprise when NBC anchor Brian Williams, instead of reading my question, announced: “There is a North Vietnamese here,” as if it was an important event in itself to have a North … [Read more...] about Obama visit shows Vietnam is now a country, not a war

American veterans return to Vietnam to ‘make things right’
Participants of the Veterans for Peace tour. Wyatt Olson/Stars and Stripes Michael Marceau didn’t leave Vietnam under the best of circumstances in May 1970.Stationed about 30 miles from the Cambodia border in an infantry unit, he “zigged instead of zagged” during an early morning rocket attack and was hit by shrapnel. He was hospitalized two weeks, then spent months in rehab. This month, Marceau, 63, came back to the country where he once served.“I want to try to make a better exit this time,” Marceau joked as he strolled through the grounds around the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.Marceau is one of nine vets who are taking part in the first Veterans for Peace Tour.
