Prof. Nguyen Van Thanh has won the silver prize of Best Practices Awards Programme of the Energy Smart Communities Initiative (ESCI) under the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. With a project on turning Vietnam’s Hai Phong into a green port city, Thanh, who is former Secretary of the city’s Party Committee, brought home the silver prize in the category of Low Carbon Model Towns. Vietnam’s high-ranking military delegation visits EU Vietnamese Minister of National Defence General Ngo Xuan Lich Vietnamese Minister of National Defence General Ngo Xuan Lich is leading a high-ranking military delegation to visit the European Union (EU) from October 14-19. The visit is made at the invitation of Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. The two sides will ink a Framework Participation Agreement (FPA) to establish Vietnam’s engagement in the EU’s crisis management activities. The Vietnamese delegation’s visit and the signing of the FPA aim to boost defence relations with the EU, which is in line with the spirit of the EU-Vietnam Partnership and Cooperation Agreement. Yellow card pushes seafood industry developing sustainably Vietnam’s seafood exports have been seriously affected since the European Commission issued an official warning against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) exploitation of Vietnamese seafood. The European Commission’s yellow card has seriously affected Vietnamese seafood firms, resulting in a downturn in export value to the EU and a shortage of input material. Given these acute challenges, this company has still raked in six million USD, recorded 12 percent export growth in the first eight months of 2019. This success looks like a timely change in tactics. The EU is no longer Vietnam’s second biggest seafood importer. With import value of 251 million USD, it now stands in fifth position. Kim Cheng, from San Diego, California, USA My husband and I have been living in Vietnam for over six years, and I've celebrated four memorable Christmases and New Year's holidays in Ho Chi Minh City. I remember my first Christmas in Vietnam. It was December 24, 2008 and Vietnam had just won the AFF Championship. Most of Le Duan Street and the area surrounding the Notre Dame Cathedral had thousands of motorbikes with fans cheering and waving Vietnamese flags. Then, just before midnight, there was a wave of silence. It was really cool to see a mass of people become so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. The weather in the city during December is similar to the weather in my hometown most of the year. This year, a small group of friends and I will have Christmas Eve dinner at Saffron restaurant.
