Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung Chung met Feldmann on June 20 as part of his ongoing visit to Germany and other European countries. The Hanoi leader updated his counterpart on the development of the capital of Vietnam and proposed the two sides establish twinning relations and partner in areas like tourism, urban planning, human resources training and technological transfer. To do so, the two cities need to increase cultural exchanges and ramp up investment promotion events, he said. He also invited Feldmann to visit Hanoi. Feldmann, for his part, said he was impressed with what Hanoi has done to improve social welfare for its people and reduce poverty and supported Chung’s proposals. Feldmann wants the two sides to study the key contents of the cooperation and soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to translate these contents into reality. In a countryside garment factory in the northern Bac Giang Province, Bien sits beside a bunch of red cloth bags. Around her dozens of other workers are making bags on sewing machines, but not Bien: Her job is to affix the company label on the bags, and she gets less than VND100,000 ($4.32) a day for it. Before being trafficked to China, she had been quite resourceful, working her family's rice field in Dong Lo Commune in Bac Giang while also attending a babysitting class. On October 2, 1991, when she was 23, Bien … [Read more...] about The plight of human trafficking survivors: Back from hell but to what?

This is the highest commitment level Vietnam has received among the FTAs it has inked. Notably, many commodities will benefit from the zero-percent tariffs immediately after the deal becomes effective such as coffee, peppercorn, honey and aquatic products.
