An export shrimp processing line in Vietnam (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese agro-forestry-fishery products are now available in 180 countries and territories thanks to Vietnam’s increasing global economic integration and implementation of free trade agreements. Economic integration has helped Vietnamese agri-products overcome tariff barriers, especially staples such as rice and aquatic and wood products. The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) has created excellent opportunities for Vietnamese agri-products to join global supply chains, according to deputy head of the Agro Processing Market Development Authority (AgroTrade) Tran Van Cong. It also creates a driver as well as pressure on domestic businesses to increase exports of processed products with high added values, he added. According to Nguyen Ton Quyen, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association, other members of the CPTPP are potential … [Read more...] about Global economic integration helps Vietnam expand agri-products markets

Indonesian martial art pencak silat gets UNESCO heritage status

December 15, 2019 by

Anwar bin Sholeh had something to cheer when he showed up at a Jakarta training centre to practice pencak silat -- the Indonesian martial art was added to UNESCO's prestigious heritage list. "It's an honour that pencak silat has been recognised internationally," the 38-year-old, who has been practising the art since elementary school, told AFP. "This will motivate us to preserve our traditions and culture," he added. Dating back to as early as the 6th Century, one legend has it that the ancient martial art -- which blends self-defense and artistic elements -- originated after a woman watched a tiger do battle with a giant hawk, and copied their techniques to fight off a pestering group of drunken men. The term pencak silat describes hundreds of indigenous combat styles in Southeast Asia, with fighters wielding a terrifying array of weapons such as knives, sickles and machetes. It has gained greater awareness outside Indonesia after being featured in Star Wars and John … [Read more...] about Indonesian martial art pencak silat gets UNESCO heritage status
