After nearly two years of participating and implementing the programme, VPBank has achieved impressive results in promoting import, export and local trade. In 2017, VPBank saw remarkable achievements in transaction banking in 2017, including increased off-balance sheet balance, foreign exchange trading balance and fees income. The bank’s off-balance sheet balance rose 20%, with fees income from trade finance transactions up 13.8% year-on-year. As October ends, the leopard trees get into their act along the Tay Ho (West Lake) and the vast Bau Can tea estate in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai. The tree, said to be native to Brazilian rainforests, is scientifically known as Libidibia ferrea or Caesalpinia ferrea. The freshwater lake and the tea plantation are about 25 km south of the center of Pleiku Town, capital of Gia Lai. The lake covers an area of nearly 100 hectares in Tay Ho Village, Bau Can Commune, Chu Prong District. It irrigates the tea plantation. The Bau Can tea plantation dotted with the leopard trees in bloom. Grown on an area of more than 400 hectares, the plantation has an annual output of 2,000 tons of tea buds each year. In a countryside garment factory in the northern Bac Giang Province, Bien sits beside a bunch of red cloth bags. Around her dozens of other workers are making bags on sewing machines, but not Bien: Her job is to affix the company label on the bags, and she gets less than VND100,000 ($4.32) a day for it. She was given that job after failing to learn sewing despite eight days of training at the factory. "It's too difficult, I can't sew," she says. Bien is one of many Vietnamese trafficking victims rescued from China who returned lost, damaged, with little assurance their life would ever go back to the normal old days.
