Nguyễn Việt Dũng, director of the city’s Department of Science and Technology, said the organisers want to build a culture of innovation and start-ups in all fields and spread the spirit of creativity and innovation. In recent year, startups have grown rapidly in the city, attracting domestic and foreign investors. “We hope this annual award will encourage and speed up innovation activities, and that research results will be applied in the community,” he said. Winners receive HCM City’s 2018 I-Star Awards for creativity, innovation and business start-ups. — VNS Photo Ngọc DiệpViet Nam News HCM CITY — Eleven individuals and businesses were yesterday conferred the 2018 I-Star Award and a cash prize of VNĐ50 million (US$2,140) for their creativity, innovation and services rendered to the community. The awards are given in four categories: business start-ups showing creativity and economic efficiency; organisations or individuals offering solutions that benefit the community; media work that has great a impact on the community; and investors, consultants and incubator organisations that support innovation and start-ups. Launched by HCM City at the end of March, the awards committee had received 197 applications from which 40 were chosen for the final round. The Vietnamese women's football team was given over VND8bn (USD344,000) after winning the 30th Southeast Asian Games tournament against Thailand. Vietnamese women's football team wins the 30th Southeast Asian Games They were given VND1bn from Vietnam Football Federation and VND2bn from the head of the women’s team at the Vietnam Football Federation Pham Thanh Hung. An anonymous businessperson gave the team VND1bn. Many businesses and individuals also gave the team hundreds of millions of VND. For the final match, the team were awarded VND4bn and a total of VND8bn has been awarded to the team since the start of the tournament. They were awarded VND4bn after winning the semi-final match. A meeting of the United Nations Security Council. — THX/VNA PhotoViet Nam News NEW YORK — Việt Nam was selected as the only candidate of the Asia-Pacific region for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2020-21 tenure at a monthly meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group at the UN on May 25. Under the chair of head of the Samoa Mission to the United Nations Ambassador Ali’ioaiga Feturi Elsaia, who is the group’s chairman in May, the 54-member group agreed to nominate Việt Nam as its only candidate for the position. The voting will be held by the UN General Assembly in June, 2019.
