Tran Song Hai, vice president of the Vietnamese Football Fans Association, said aside from Vietnamese living and working in UAE and nearby nations, many fans have flown into Dubai from Vietnam for the match. Early Thursday, Vietnam Airlines carried more than 300 Vietnamese fans from Hanoi to Dubai while the Emirates served two groups of 70 Vietnamese fans on the same route. Leaving his home at 4 a.m. this morning for the airport, Nguyen Xuan Trung in Hanoi said he spent VND28 million ($1,200) on a one-day tour to Dubai to watch the game as soon as Vietnam beat Jordan on Sunday and broke into the quarterfinals of Asian Cup 2019. "It’s a rare opportunity for Vietnamese football and as a big fan I could not miss it. Watching a game directly at the stadium, listening to the crowd, looking at the field would be far more exciting than watching it on TV," he said. Afraid that traffic jams could cause him to miss his flight to Dubai, Nguyen Van Phuong from Hai Phong City, two hours east … [Read more...] about Asian Cup: 1,000 Vietnamese fans in Dubai for Vietnam-Japan quarterfinal

Nigeria’s Boko Haram has abducted more than 1,000 children since 2013: UN
Islamist fighters from Nigeria’s Boko Haram group have abducted more than 1,000 children in the northeast since 2013, the United Nations children’s agency UNICEF said on Friday. The militants regularly took youngsters to spread fear and show power, the agency said on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok, a case that triggered global outrage. “Children in northeastern Nigeria continue to come under attack at a shocking scale,” said Mohamed Malick Fall, UNICEF’s Nigeria head. Exhibition recalls memories of Dien Bien Phu in the Air Victory
“A lot of mixed feelings. I’m very curious about the history both for Vietnam and America, so mixed feelings. But it’s very helpful and informative.” That was Raymond Lombardi, a visitor from the US. Touring the first exhibition hall, “Facing the B52s”, he viewed photos of Hanoi and Hai Phong, which were heavily bombarded by US planes. The second hall, “Hilton Hotel-Hanoi”, which was the nickname given to Hoa Lo Prison by US prisoners, tells the stories of the prison guards who guarded the detained American pilots. The third hall, “Returning day” has photos and objects related to the exchange of prisoners of war by the governments of Vietnam and the US following the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973. The final hall, “Building up the future”, shows the Vietnamese people’s longstanding aspirations for peace.
