She will share the stage with Japanese bassist Stomu Takeishi and American drummer Rudy Royston. The show titled Myra Melford in Black & White is part of the Soul Live Project Series: Jazz Through Time. The concert is expected to bring audiences a musical experience with a special and unique contrast offering a delicacy, gracefulness and explosion yet.
Originally from Chicago and classically trained, Myra Melford is a composer with a singular, kinetic, and lyrical voice in piano improvisation. Chicago blues, architecture, jazz and experimental music inspire her work.
Myra Melford has released more than 20 albums and collaborated with famous artists, including Dave Douglas, Marty Ehrlich, Liberty Ellman, Erik Friedlander, Ben Goldberg, Joseph Jarman, Leroy Jenkins, Ron Miles and others.
She won awards, scuh as a Fulbright scholarship in 2000, Composer of the Year in 2004 by the Jazz Journalists Association and Pianist of the Year in 2008 and 2009.
She is currently a professor of Composition and Improvisational Practices in the Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley.
