At the meeting, many delegates raised questions on building a trademark for the two key seafood sectors of shrimp and tra fish, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported. Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam noted that the ministry wants to pursue the development of tra fish and shrimp trademarks this year, but it has yet to find the right ones. He told the delegates he had ordered the Directorate of Fisheries, the Agro Processing and Market Development Authority and the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency, under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, to seek out appropriate plans for trademark development. VASEP should work with the three agencies to quickly find a plan to develop the two key seafood trademarks as trademarks play a crucial role, stressed Nam, adding that he wants all procedures to be completed as soon as possible. Tra fish, the second key seafood product behind shrimp, had export turnover reaching nearly US$2 billion last year. The tra fish sector has seen 20 years of remarkable development, but it has also faced unstable periods and failed to obtain a national trademark.
