A few years ago, around the time of season 3, I was talking to a friend about Game of Thrones. We were throwing around theories about the next season or so’s potential events, and somewhere along the line I found myself freewheeling right out to the show’s eventual end-game and conclusion. Obviously I didn’t have all the granular details (and still don’t), but suddenly the overall shape of Thrones’ narrative arc, and the thematic reasons for it, became clear.
