Two more carriers get 4G licenses Van Ly HANOI – Global Telecommunications Corporation (Gtel) and MobiFone have received 4G licenses after Viettel and VNPT were licensed last week to provide the fourth-generation mobile service in the country. Among the five carriers in Vietnam, Vietnamobile is the only one that has yet to join the 4G market with high growth potential. Gtel was not among the carriers allowed by the Ministry of Information and Communications to provide the 4G service on a trial basis. The ministry has permitted Viettel, VNPT, MobiFone and FPT Telecom to pilot their 4G data networks. The first three have completed their trial run while FPT Telecom has remained tight-lipped about whether it would test provide the service or seek a formal license. Mobile carriers see 4G as a new window of business opportunity on the telecom market as 4G offers significantly faster data speeds. Viettel is the first to urge the ministry to issue a 4G license for it, saying the service is an irreversible broadband communication trend in the world. VNPT described 4G as a new opportunity as it will put all carriers on the same start line.
