This year many Vietnamese men and women participated in international beauty pageants, but they treated investments in costumes lightly, especially in traditional garments. Huong Giang, Vietnam’s contestant at the Miss World pageant, asked designer Son Collection to send two more gowns to South Africa quickly because her costumes received negative comments. Vinh Thuy attended the Mister International 2009 in Taiwan in costumes of Sea Collection by designers Do Manh Cuong and Thinh Tri. His traditional outfit was designed by Thinh Tri, a lecturer from the Art. The major theme of this costume is describing Vietnam’s history through patterns. Vinh Thuy’s traditional outfit – a loin cloth – is very similar to the one that Tien Doan performed in the Mister International 2008, so it didn’t surprise the jury. Meanwhile, Chung Thuc Quyen passed 80 contestants to win the Best Traditional Outfit at the Miss Supernational pageant in Poland. This is the first time Vietnam earning this award at an international beauty contest. Thuc Quyen is also the first Vietnamese girl who brought ao tu than (four panel traditional dress) and non quai thao (flat palm hat with fringes) to an international pageant, instead of the ao dai.
