Nhan Dan – International masters, Lai Ly Huynh and Ngo Lan Huong, have won the men’s and women’s overall crowns, respectively, at the 2013 National First Class Xiangqi (Chinese chess) Championships, which concluded on Thursday, March 7 in Ho Chi Minh City.
Binh Duong’s Ly Huynh staged a stunning surprise at this year’s tournament, drawing with HCM City’s Nguyen Tran Do Ninh in two legs’ final matches before winning a blitz play-off to win his first-ever First Class title at the age of 23.
On the women’s side, HCM City’s Lan Huong marked an impressive comeback, beating Binh Dinh’s Ho Thi Thanh Hong in both decisive matches to win the championship following an amazing unbeaten run throughout the nine-day competition.
The tournament began on February 27 and attracted the participation of 71 players, 46 men and 25 women, from across the country. It provided a good opportunity to select outstanding players for the national team in preparation for the upcoming international xiangqi competitions.
